CRMs Are Only for Big Companies: Myth vs Fact for Irish Solar Installers

SolarFlow artwork: CRMs Are Only for Big Companies: Myth vs Fact

There's a belief in the trade that a CRM is something only big companies need. Here are four myths that sit behind it, and what we think is closer to the truth.

Myth 1: "We're too small to need one"

Fact: The paperwork doesn't shrink with the company. Every grant-funded home installation brings the same job admin: SEAI grant documentation, the ESB Networks connection paperwork (the NC6 for most home systems), the Declaration of Works, site photos and certificates.

What changes with size is who does it. A larger company may have an admin team. In a small one, that work tends to land on the owner or one person in the office. That's an argument for having a system, not against it.

Myth 2: "We already have a system"

Fact: Many installers do, it's just spread across several places. Leads in an inbox, jobs on a whiteboard or spreadsheet, photos in a messaging app, forms in a folder. That works until someone is off, the diary fills up, or a photo turns out to be missing. A missing photo can mean a return visit and a delayed grant submission.

The real cost of a scattered system isn't the software you avoided. It's the time spent looking for information you already have.

Myth 3: "A CRM is too complicated or too expensive for a small team"

Fact: Generic CRMs are built for sales teams in any industry, so they don't come with the steps an installer works through. Solar-specific software starts from those steps instead: lead, site survey, design, scheduling, install, grant paperwork, certification and aftercare. On site, SolarFlow's app prompts for each required photo and works offline, so installers aren't working from memory.

On cost, SolarFlow is priced per install, so the price follows the number of jobs you do. There is also a one-off setup fee, which depends on the training you want and what you're moving from. The details are on our plans page.

Myth 4: "A CRM will force us to change how we work"

Fact: A standard workflow shouldn't be a straitjacket. SolarFlow comes with a typical installer workflow, and it works with OpenSolar and Pylon for design. If your process is different, that's worth raising in a demo. Some changes may be possible, depending on what's involved.

So who is a CRM for?

For any installer spending more time chasing information than doing the work, whatever the size of the business.

SolarFlow was built with that in mind. Its founder still runs Solar Beo, a solar installation business that uses SolarFlow itself, so the software is shaped by what actually happens on installs.
